This stylish 52-room hotel is home to a karaoke bar, a coffee shop, a restaurant, and a cocktail lounge, making it a popular hangout for locals as well as guests. You can seek out foliage on many of Providence’s tree lined streets, or use the town as your starting point to explore the small state in its prime.

The Dean Hotel has changed the game when it comes to accommodations in town

“He was truly the first to connect real, local experiences to a hotel experience,” Heckman says of Calderwood, adding, “I consider the Ace a pioneer for creating the type of hotel that I think a lot of hotels now aspire to be, which are these social, local places where the lobby is not a lobby; it’s a place where the community can come in.” The Dean lives up to this idea and expands upon it, establishing both a welcome hub for the gritty city’s creative culture and a tribute to its vibrant, eccentric history.

The Dean, in a century-old building that once housed a brothel, was named with a nod to nearby Brown University, and the look is equally smart. Brooklyn-based practice Ash NYC restored the building and furnished the 52 rooms with a mix of all-American antiques and austere contemporary pieces. The lobby - with a coffee house called Bolt - has original tile floors and the restaurant, Faust's Hofbrauhaus Biergarten, is in a street-level space once occupied by a gentlemen's club.
